Our Past...

I REMEMBER YOU
AS YOU SIT IN YOUR CHAIR
FEET PROPPED ON THE PORCH

LISTENING TO THE CARS AS THEY PASS
WATCHING THE WIND IN YOUR TREES

I REMEMBER YOUR FADED OVERALLS
THE OLD BLUE FORD
AND YOUR GRAY FELT "SUNDAY" HAT;
THE TWINKLE IN YOUR EYE AS YOU TALKED OF YOUR LAND,
LISTENING TO YOUR WELL-REHEARSED PRAYER BEFORE DINNER

I REMEMBER NOW
MORE THAN I USED TO
AS I WATCHED YOUR EMPTY CHAIR

ROCKING

IN THE SILENT WIND

How Thick is Blood?

We all recognize it as the red liquid that flows through our body but I think it’s more than that:

It’s that golden bond that is established through years and years of happiness and sorrow, giving and taking, work and play.

It’s a Granny that you ask why you keep a rooster around if he doesn’t lay any eggs—

It’s a Granddaddy that teaches you how to drive a tractor while he hooks the chain to stumps and tells you the scary tales at night when you both burn woods.

It’s Aunts who come to Lake Butler every year for one week and futilely battle for position in Granny’s kitchen.

It’s Uncles who come home to complain about who really worked the hardest while growing up.

It’s Cousins that even though you don’t understand what a cousin is or is supposed to do; you know they and you have a special bond. We are blood related? What does that mean? When you arrange a date for your cousin with your best friend and you realize “listen buddy this girl is a Hendricks so whatchit!”

But it’s less than the thickness of that.

Its Uncles and Aunts that are welcomed into the family as our own.

It’s cousins who are still cousins no matter what!!!

It’s not perfection or sublime bliss—

It’s the essence of emotion – life – purpose!!

I think its measured on those wonderful occasions when I am Blessed with the privilege of shaking a man’s hand and proclaiming – yes Sir I’m a grandson of Butler and Ollie Hendricks!!!!
